From the Editor’s Desk

Dear USTMAAA Community,

As we navigate the challenges facing the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Hospital, it is essential to address the critical issues affecting both patient care and our training program. Recent ratings placing our hospital at the bottom of Philippine healthcare institutions have underscored the urgency of our mission.

Our hospital faces shortages of essential equipment, hindering efficient patient care and limiting training opportunities for interns and residents. Without proper resources, our healthcare professionals struggle to provide the quality care our patients deserve. The scarcity of patients seeking care at our hospital affects the training experience. Interns, residents, and nurses require a diverse patient population to develop their clinical skills.

Despite these challenges, there is reason for optimism. Our new administrators, the newly reappointed Rev. Father Rector Magnificus Richard Ang, the new hospital CEO, Fr. Julius Factora, and the new Medical Director, Dr. Charito Malong, bring fresh perspectives and a commitment to revitalizing UST Hospital. Their dedication and responsiveness combined with our association’s unwavering support, can lead to transformative change. Our two newly elected dynamic Presidents of the USTMAAA, Dr. Zita B. Yorro and Foundation President, Dr. Regina Flores provided the much-needed catalyst to mobilize the US Thomasians. Together, they rallied UST alumni and graduates to contribute to the hospital’s growth. Slowly but surely, we will revive UST Hospital. Our commitment to excellence, coupled with the resolve of our new leaders, will propel us toward self-sufficiency. Let us envision a future where our hospital regains its premier position among Philippine healthcare providers. As we work tirelessly, remember that every effort counts. The light at the end of the tunnel shines brighter with each step we take.

As we prepare for the USTMAAA 32nd Grand Reunion and Clinical Convention in Chicago, June 18- 22, 2025, we embark on a mission that transcends camaraderie—it’s about shaping the future of our alma mater and its hospital. Here’s why this event matters: Our reunion brings together Thomasian medical graduates from all walks of life. It’s a time to reminisce, reconnect, and strengthen the bonds that tie us to UST. Beyond nostalgia, this reunion serves a purpose. By realizing profits and channeling them into our Foundation, we empower ourselves to support critical projects. These funds become the lifeblood of our initiatives.

Traditionally, reunions were exclusive to Jubilarian classes. But now, we’re shifting gears. The USTMAAA Grand Reunion is for all Thomasians. It’s an annual gathering where every graduate has a seat at the table. Let’s break down barriers and unite for a common cause. We’re also reaching out to our younger peers—the torchbearers of our legacy. Their commitment and enthusiasm are vital. Already, established young graduates have stepped up as speakers in our Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs. Together, we bridge generations and build a stronger future.

Join us in Chicago, where memories meet purpose. Let’s make this reunion not just a celebration of the past, but a catalyst for progress. Together, we’ll ensure UST Hospital reclaims its premier status, and our commitment echoes through generations.

In closing, I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the great job accomplished by our new Director of Communications, Dr. Marie Jo Valera, who is responsible for revitalizing the USTMAAA website and disseminating announcements to our membership.

Yours in service,

Dionisio B. Yorro, Jr., MD, FACC USTMAAA Executive Director 22 August 2024
